Gross Catholic students have several opportunities to explore their interest in theatre, stagecraft, or student directing thoughout the year. Students may take classes in Acting I or II or Stagecraft. They may also participate in theatre productions as an extra-curricular activity. Typically, the drama department presents a fall play, spring musical, freshman and sophomore play, and competes in the state one-act competition.

December 9, 2011 - All I Really Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play
Based on several disastrous theatrical experiences, All I Really Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play peels back a tattered curtain to examine the process of putting on a show that is less than good. A narrator (what bad play is complete without a narrator?) guides the audience through the whole sorry process. We go from the audition—where the director is more worried about roast beef than paying attention to the warm-up exercise, and the neurotic cast pretends to be bacon—to rehearsals—where a passive-aggressive stage manager gives everyone grief. There's also a special meeting of the Small Part Support Group and a production of Romeo and Juliet set in a Starbucks with costumes of potato sacks and cowboy hats.
Showtime: 7:00 pm Admission is free.
November 4-6 - A Doctor in Spite of Himself by Moliere, adapted by Aurand Harris
Sganarelle, a shiftless woodcutter, quarrels with his wife, Martine, who vows to get even with him. Her chance comes when she meets two servants in search of a doctor to cure their master's daughter. Martine recommends her husband in the most glowing terms, as a doctor who can perform miracles, but warns them that he will have to be beaten into it. Armed with slapsticks, the two men hail Sganarell as a great doctor, whack him roundly whenever he attempts to deny it, and thus force him into becoming a doctor in spite of himself. Fortunately, the master's daughter is only shamming illness to avoid a distasteful marriage. When Sganarelle is able to unite her with her own true love, she is miraculously cured - and Dr. Sganarelle is richly rewarded.
