‘09-‘10: Year of Champions!
Put the banners up! The 2009-2010 Gross Catholic Cougars won 4 State Championships in Chess, Journalism, Volleyball, and most recently Baseball. What a year for the Cougars!
In the fall, the volleyball team, coached by Corinne Schuster, won a tense 5th set against Grand Island Northwest to win their State Championship. The team was made up of mostly juniors, and so next year is also looking good.
The Chess Championship came next. In the finals, we had four left and they all had to win their matches in order for the team to be crowned as champions—they did!
Next, journalism took State for the third time under the tutelage of Mr. Dale Schwalm, tying with McCook.
Finally, the baseball team did what no one else has done in the state of Nebraska—they lost their first game at the state double-elimination tournament, and went on to win the championship. Making it to the finals, they had to beat #1 ranked Skutt twice in order to claim their second championship in a row. Skutt had beaten the Cougars twice before in the regular season. But, this wasn’t the regular season. Winning the first game 3-1 and shutting out Skutt 6-0 in the second game, the boys achieved an incredible feat. Coach Flip said that it was nothing short of a miracle. It is the 6th State Championship for the baseball team.
In 2009-2010, Gross Catholic achieved excellence in both athletics and activities. Go Cougars!
