At the Class B state journalism championships, sophomore John Plambeck earned a third place medal in news/feature photography; junior Jim Ficenec earned a sixth place medal in yearbook sports feature writing; and senior Ryan Crnkovich finished 6th in editorial writing. That was in addition to the 6th place medal for info graphics that Amanda Novotny had already earned based on the prelims.
Gross Catholic journalism finished third in the Class B state journalism contest based on preliminary entries. The following students will compete for medals in Lincoln on May 11, 2009: senior Peggy Novotny (qualified for three contests), senior Chris Dorwart (qualified for two contests), sophomore John Plambeck, junior Anna Shymanski, sophomore Joe Murnan (qualified for two contests), and junior Jim Ficenec. Senior Amanda Novotny earned a sixth place medal in info graphics and senior Ryan Crnkovich is an alternate in editorial writing.
April 23rd, 2009, at the UNO journalism conference, Gross Catholic journalism students finished second in the sweepstakes award, with five newspaper staff members earning 11 certificates.
In 2000 & 2004, Gross Catholic finished first as Class B State Journalism champions. In 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007 Gross Catholic came in as runner-up in the Nebraska High School Press Association Spring Sweepstakes Contest in Journalism. In 2009, Gross Catholic took 3rd Place.
