When you see the Nike swoosh, what do you think about? When you see the Starbucks symbol on a coffee cup, how do you feel? Nike and Starbucks and every other company nowadays take great care to “brand” themselves. They carefully guide how they project themselves to attain the best possible reaction of their current and hopefully soon-to-be customers. Schools and students can also “brand” themselves.
Randy Hawthorne, Vice President of Firespring Marketing Company from Lincoln, Nebraska, came gave an interesting presentation at the RCC Leadership Academy on Monday, February 6th. The subject of his seminar was “Branding.” His presentation discussed how companies, schools and even individuals brand themselves. During the talk, Hawthorne stated that he researched all of the RCC schools and then went on to say some very flattering things about Gross Catholic’s online presence.
In addition to Hawthorne’s presentation, the participants from all the attending RCC’s student councils were able to interact with each other, sharing ideas.
Twenty-six student council members attended the day long workshop sponsored by Roncalli Catholic School. Katie Mitzlaff, a junior at Gross Catholic said, “At the RCC Conference, We did some exercises to get you thinking about branding your school and what it means not only to say what your school is, but how to act out in public and make those sayings into realities and getting your school a good reputation. I also found it interesting to see how other Student Councils set up and planned for school activities. It broadened my thinking about events to plan for school. It was really fun and I think we got a lot out of it. We brought back some good ideas to help make Gross more wonderful than it already is by getting the name out and by making a splendid reputation for ourselves.”
Senior student council member Connor Sullivan also commented about his experience. “This year's leadership meeting was a blast. The kids this year were very involved and talkative, which made the whole academy more excited and better for all the other kids at the meeting. Randy Hawthorne was extremely active and motivated to get us kids motivated, which was extremely fun and funny at the same time. Overall I though Monday was a great day.”
Next year the RCC Leadership Academy will be sponsored by Gross Catholic High School.
